Ramen Hero - Creamy Shrimp Ramen
Another special Ramen Hero offering. For 2018, I celebrated the new year the only way I know how....eating a bowl of ramen! This was a special seasonal ramen for the 2018 New Year and was $14/serving before it was sold out.
The broth was made with Tori Paitan (creamy chicken) broth and soy milk, which added to the creaminess of the dish. The shrimp was boiled with sake, soy sauce and mirin. The other protein was a shrimp meatball mixed with some garlic. The lotus root was sauteed with some soy sauce and the parsley was tied in a knot. To fill the new year theme, in Japanese culture, shrimp is in a lot of new years dishes. The holes in the lotus root symbolize one having a clear vision of the future. And the parsley is tied in a knot, which is symbolic for tying relationships
The broth had a nice seafoody flavor to it. The shrimp was kind of a pain to remove the head and legs and then devein it (although my shrimp in another bowl was already deveined) but the shrimp meatball was extremely good with a strong shrimp flavor. I felt the texture of the lotus root really didn't fit in a bowl of soup, but I understand that it was included for its symbolism. I also felt that the mitsuba (parsley) was just kind of eh. When I made my bowl, I had to add my usual soft-boiled egg. The yolk added to the creaminess of the broth and just made everything more happy.
