Ramen Hero - Tonkotsu

"Originated in the southern Kyushu island, tonkotsu is a thick creamy broth made from pork bones simmered over 8 hours, creating a delicious meaty perfection." - Ramen Hero

My second ramen kit with Ramen Hero has arrived!  It was a tonkotsu broth and included chashu.  Another good bowl.  The broth was very rich, thick, and flavorful.  The chashu, although not "falling apart" tender, still tasted pretty good and was an improvement over the last kit's chicken wing, both in taste and in ease of eating.

Another thing I liked about this kit was the expanded toppings that came with it.  Last kit, for the chicken paitan, the recommended toppings that weren't included were corn, an egg, and green onions.  I have corn and eggs, but I never have green onions on hand.  This time, the green onions were included, along with Nori seaweed like last time.  But also included were kikurage (wood ear mushrooms) and red pickled ginger.  Other suggested toppings are white sesame and black pepper.  I didn't have any white sesame but I sprinkled some furikake (Japanese seasoning consisting of seaweed, sesame seeds, ground fish, etc) over everything.

I will say the broth was almost a little too rich for my taste, but that is a personal thing and I was still able to drink all of it.  The mushrooms added a nice umami to the bowl and the ginger added a little bit of salty sourness, which I really liked.  Topped off with a soft-boiled egg, chopped green onions, and the seaweed really gave the whole meal a nice finish.  The instructions still remain easy and the bowl took about 15 minutes, 5 of which was me trying to peel my egg, which I was having problems with.  Anyways, check them out!  The bowl of ramen was $10 (but you have to buy 4 servings for $40).  The creamy chicken paitan is still available as well.

Mmmm tonkotsu!

Crushed it.
